TOUR INFORMATION
No motorcyclist likes travelling long distances on the motorway but in order to quickly traverse the industrial regions of Belgium and Germany this self-guided tour does use the Autoroute system for most of the first day. Keep in mind that although the first day does have a slightly high mileage the Autoroute system on the continent is far quieter and more relaxed than in the UK and therefore the miles pass by quicker than you can imagine.
Alternative Ferry Crossing
If you prefer to reduce the mileage on your first riding day an alternative is to take the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam or Harwich to Hook of Holland. These options not only shorten the first day’s distance to just over 200 miles but also allow for a more relaxed and scenic ride incorporating a mix of Autoroute and rural roads. Using these crossings also allows you to cross the famous bridge at Arnhem which was the setting for Operation Market Garden in World War Two. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss pricing and itinerary adjustments for these alternatives.
This tour does contain some reasonably high mileage days and some challenging roads in the Mountains. Therefore this tour would be suitable for riders who are used to covering long distances and understand and accept the above. This tour has several destinations where we stay for more than one night so there is ample opportunity to rest and relax along the way.
TOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: 310 Miles
Whichever crossing you choose the first day will utilise the Autoroute system allowing you to quickly cover the miles to the first hotel. Located close to the small German town of Soest your superior four star hotel is a restored half-timbered 19th century manor house which features an indoor swimming pool and sauna.
Day 2: 230 Miles
Your first stop today is the Möhnesee dam which was one of the main targets of the famous ‘bouncing bomb’ used to such devastating effect in the Dambusters raids of the Second World War. The journey continues as you enter the Rothaargebirge national park which is a popular destination for bikers from all over the world. Your final destination today is a four star hotel located at the foot of the Wurmberg Mountain. Offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside the hotel features indoor and outdoor pools and a sauna..
Day 3: Ride-Out 120/60 Miles
It is no surprise that the Harz is such a magnet for motorcyclists with mile after mile of challenging bends and spectacular scenery. Your supplied ride out into the Harz Mountains will take you to the town of Goslar with streets of beautifully carved, half-timbered houses and to the Torfhaus which affords spectacular views of the highest peak in the Harz Mountains ‘the Brocken’. As today’s ride-out is a figure eight configuration it can easily be shortened to just 90 miles while still experiencing the natural beauty of the Harz region.
Day 4: 245 Miles
Leaving the Harz region behind your route will see you ride an impressive series of 37 hairpins bends as you climb the Kyffhaeuser Mountain and visit the historic castle and monument at the summit. Your route continues through low mountain ranges and dense forests before reaching Pilsen in the Czech Republic. Located in the historic district and less than half a mile from the famous Urquell brewery your luxury four star hotel is perfectly placed to enjoy this unique Bohemian city.
Day 5: Ride or Rest Day
Today is a ride or rest day allowing you the freedom to explore Pilsen, take a tour of the Urquell brewery, visit the city of Prague or take a leisurely ride-out through the Czech countryside which is supplied in your tour pack.
Day 6: Monday 5th August – 260 Miles
Today you head further South through the Šumava National Park which is located in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. The National park is littered with numerous large plateaux, glacial lakes and is covered by the most extensive forest in Central Europe. By midday you cross into Bavaria and the landscape changes dramatically as the rolling hills give way to the mighty Austrian Alps. Your hotel for the next three nights is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park which is home to Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner.
Day 7 & 8: Ride or Rest Days
Both these days are ride or rest days enabling you to plan your own special itinerary. Ride-outs are supplied for the famous Grossglockner pass - one of Europe’s greatest alpine roads and the Obersalzberg where you can take the bus to visit the legendary Eagle’s Nest. Alternatively, you could visit the beautiful town of Salzburg, the birthplace of one of the most famous composers of all time — Mozart.
Day 9: 250 Miles
Today you depart Austria via the spectacular Gerlos Pass before heading north into Bavaria along the scenic Romantische Strasse. This iconic route winds its way through a myriad of small villages that are so typical of the region. The walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is your eventual destination which is one of the oldest and most historic medieval towns in Bavaria. Seemingly untouched by the passage of time and encircled by the undamaged 14th century wall this town is just waiting to be explored.
Day 10: 220 Miles
Today is a mixture of Autoroutes and rural roads as you make your way to the wine growing slopes of the Mosel. En-route you enter the forested Pfalzer and Saar Hunsruck National Parks. These parks are probably one of Germany’s best kept secrets as the almost traffic free roads twist and turn through the forest and it is little wonder that this area is such a favourite with local bikers. A warm welcome awaits you as you arrive at your final hotel close to the banks of the Mosel river.
Day 11: 280 Miles
Today you head towards the Eiffel region of Germany and the Des Hautes Fagnes National Park before joining the Autoroute system and your final push back to the Euro tunnel and your afternoon crossing back to Folkestone.
