TOUR INFORMATION
No motorcyclist likes travelling long distances on the motorway but in order to quickly traverse the industrial regions of Belgium and Germany this self-guided tour does use the Autoroute system for most of the first day. Keep in mind that although the first day does have a slightly high mileage the Autoroute system on the continent is far quieter and more relaxed than in the UK and therefore the miles pass by quicker than you can imagine.
Alternative Ferry Crossing
If you prefer to reduce the mileage on your first riding day an alternative is to take the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam or Harwich to Hook of Holland. These options not only shorten the first day’s distance to just over 200 miles but also allow for a more relaxed and scenic ride incorporating a mix of Autoroute and rural roads. Using these crossings also allows you to cross the famous bridge at Arnhem which was the setting for Operation Market Garden in World War Two.
This self-guided motorcycle tour offers an exceptional mix of stunning scenery, superb riding roads, and rich historical interest. From the engineering marvels of the Dambusters dams to the cultural splendour of Prague, every day offers something new to discover. With carefully chosen, high-quality hotels and a balanced itinerary, this tour is suitable for both experienced continental riders and those venturing abroad for the first time.
TOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: 310 miles
Today begins with an early morning Euro tunnel crossing before taking to the Autoroutes and heading across Belgium into Germany. Your first overnight stop is in a restored 19th century hotel close to the small town of Soest. Although today’s route is more about making steady progress than taking in scenery unfortunately it is an essential part of the journey that allows you to comfortably cover the distance required.
Day 2: 230 miles
On the night of May 16th 1943 a Squadron of Lancaster bombers departed on a daring raid deep into industrial Germany. The objective was to bounce a specially designed bomb across the water and destroy three of the most important dams in the Ruhr Valley the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe. The raid was a success and the legend of the 'Dambusters' was born.
Today your first stop is the primary target of the Dambusters raids the Möhnesee Dam. Later you will visit the secondary targets of the Sorpe and Eder as you continue through the Forested Rothaargebirge national park en-route to the Harz Mountains. You will spend the next two nights in a four star hotel located at the foot of the Wurmberg Mountain. Offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside the hotel offers both indoor and outdoor pools and a sauna providing the perfect base to relax and explore this wonderful region of Germany.
Day 3: Ride-Out 160/90 miles
It is no surprise that the Harz is a magnet for motorcyclists with mile after mile of challenging bends and spectacular scenery. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed town of Goslar which is renowned for its beautifully preserved timber-framed houses and the Torfhaus viewpoint — a famous biker stop offering breathtaking views of the Brocken, the Harz’s highest peak. As today’s ride out is a figure eight configuration it can easily be shortened to just 90 miles while still experiencing the natural beauty of the Harz region.
Day 4: 225 miles
Today you leave the Harz region behind and ride one of Germany’s great motorcycling roads — the Kyffhäuser Pass. Featuring 37 exhilarating hairpin bends you will eventually arrive at the summit and visit the historic monument and castle. Continuing south through rural back roads you arrive at your next destination in the town of Seiffen close to the Czech border. Seiffen sits in the heart of the Ore Mountains and is most famous for its centuries-old wooden toy-making tradition. Your four star hotel offers a sauna, steam room and heated pool as well as panoramic views of the Erzgebirge Nature Park.
Day 5: Ride-Out 125 miles
Your ride out today will include a visit to the town of Colditz, best known for its castle which was used as a high security POW camp during WWII. There are guided tours available for anyone who would like to explore the tunnels, escape routes, and exhibits that tell the story of Allied prisoners who attempted daring escapes. For those wishing to take some time to relax there are plenty of other activities in the area to enjoy such as narrow gauge railway and a motorbike museum.
Day 6: 150 miles
Today you cross the border into the Czech Republic and head to Prague which is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Arriving early you have time to explore the City’s famous sights such as the Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock, and Prague Castle. Continuing through the Czech countryside you visit the 12th-century Křivoklát Castle before reaching Pilsen which is the home to the famous Urquell brewery. Located in the historic district of Pilsen and less than half a mile from the brewery your luxury four star hotel is perfectly placed to enjoy this unique Bohemian city.
Day 7:
Today is a rest day where you are free to organise your own itinerary.
Day 8: 250 miles
Today’s route takes you north through no less than three German national parks, combining beautiful forested roads with relaxed touring stretches. Your destination is the historic town of Fulda, where your centrally located hotel provides easy access to the Baroque cathedral, castle and charming Old Town.
Day 9: 240 miles
Using a mixture of Autoroute and rural roads today you make your way to the wine growing slopes of the Mosel and to the small town of Bernkastel-Kues. Overlooked by the Landshut Castle the town is famous for its unique Market square and its many well preserved half-timbered houses. Continuing along the winding Mosel you arrive at your final overnight stay in a traditional, family-run hotel nestled in the peaceful Ruwer Valley of Germany.
Day 10: 290 miles
Following breakfast you head across country through Luxembourg and Belgium before eventually joining the Autoroute system towards Calais and the afternoon Euro tunnel back to Folkestone. For those wishing to utilise the Hull or Harwich overnight crossings the route is similar with a mileage of approximately 280 miles.
