Our tour starts from Portsmouth and takes the overnight ferry to Bilbao. Arriving in Spain at midday we take the coast road and follow the Bay of Biscay towards the Cantabrian Mountains which now become visible in the distance.

Before long we have reached the Picos du Europa which is a National Park within the Cantabrian Mountains and is an unbelievable place to ride a motorcycle. Our journey takes us along the northern stretch of the ‘Pots and Pans route (more of this later) to our 8th century monastery hotel on the banks of the River Sella.

Day three and we are almost instantly transported into a motorcyclist vision of heaven. The southerly side of the Picos is just mile after mile of stunning roads and scenery. The road which surrounds the Picos du Europa National Park is fondly referred to as the ‘Pots and Pans’ due to the two towns which lie along the route, Potes on the east side and Panes at the northern tip.

Day five and the tour heads further south into the wine growing region of the Duoro valley. Riding on the ridge overlooking the river and the numerous vineyards, the landscape is spectacular. Sandemans is one of the largest Port producers in the World and today we visit their Quinta do Seixo vineyard for a guided tour. Suitably refreshed and ultimately more educated we take to the hills again and resume our journey deeper into Portugal and to the Serra da Estrela National Park.

The Estrela located in central Portugal is a place of surprising contrast. From heavily forested mountains and valleys to lunar landscapes this in an awesome place to ride your bike. The roads are almost perfect thanks to the money supplied by the European Union and wind effortlessly through the mountains.

Our hotel is no less spectacular offering panoramic views over Cova da Beira valley. With an outdoor pool and a restaurant serving traditional local specialities this is an ideal place to spend the next two nights. Whilst here you can choose to relax by the pool or join us on our ride out through the park which includes a visit to the Torre monument that marks the highest point of mainland Portugal.

Day eight and the great roads just keep coming as we cross the province of León which is characterized by rolling countryside, round mountains covered in forests and picturesque villages.

As we head further north back towards the Cantabrian Mountains we stop for lunch by the Lake at Riano. The lake with its backdrop of mountains surrounding its shores has to be one of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere. We re-enter the Picos da Europa national park via the eastern section of the ‘Pots and Pans’ route and make our way to our hotel situated in the heart of the Liébana valley.

Day nine and we ride through the fantastic Hermida Gorge as we head back to Bilbao for our overnight ferry back to Portsmouth.

The Tour

Day seven and we leave the Estrela and begin our journey north but the amazing roads and scenery are far from over. Our route today takes us back to the Duoro as we follow the river along the valley which separates Portugal from Spain. Later in the day we cross the Sierra de la Culebra hunting reserve which is located at the southern fringes of the Cantabrian Mountains and is home to a healthy population of wolves.

Situated in the area which once was the ancient kingdom of Castille and crossed by the Spanish route of the silver our hotel for the evening is an old 19th century mansion house which is surrounded by Romanesque churches, stone walls, fortresses and castles. Tonight you are free to explore the narrow streets of this unique Spanish town.

Safe in the knowledge that we will be returning to this area we head west into the Mampodre National Game Reserve. Our journey continues through miles of scenic back roads to our next port of call, the beautiful town of Ponferreda.

Day four and we continue our journey and enter Galicia. Galicia is known in Spain as the ‘land of the 1000 rivers’ and it is not difficult to see why as we travel through stunning mountains and valleys before entering Portugal via the Da-Peneda-Geres National Park. The historic town of Guimaraes is our destination and with the hotel only a few minutes walk from the centre so tonight you are free to explore the town with its numerous bars and restaurants.

As the first capital of Portugal and birthplace of the nation's first king, Guimaraes is one of Portugal’s most historic cities and its medieval streets and well preserved monuments make it one of the most attractive places to visit in Portugal.

Perfectly surfaced traffic free roads winding through miles of stunning scenery are what Northern Spain and Portugal has to offer. Places where the pace of life is relaxed and the day is measured only by the setting of the Sun.

Join us as we ride from the Cantabrian Mountains to the unspoilt heartland of Portugal.
