Book This Tour BACK TO TOP

Day 1: Sunday 5th August

The tour begins in Plymouth as we board the flagship of the Brittany ferries fleet, the Pont Aven. With an la carte restaurant, cocktail and lounge bars and cinema this is the perfect place to relax before the tour. For your comfort we have secured larger cabins for everyone on the crossings.

Day 2: Monday 6th August - 85 Miles

Our lunch time arrival in Santander allows us plenty of time to enjoy today’s route as we follow the Bay of Biscay towards the Picos Mountains which soon become visible in the distance. Before long we are enjoying the northern stretch of the ‘Pots and Pans route (more of this later) en-route to our 8th century monastery hotel on the banks of the River Sella.

Day 3: Tuesday 7th August - 190 Miles

Immediately we leave the hotel we are transported into a motorcyclist vision of heaven. The southerly side of the Picos is just mile after mile of stunning roads and scenery. The road which surrounds the Picos du Europa National Park is fondly referred to as the ‘Pots and Pans’ due to the two towns which lie along the route, Potes on the east side and Panes at the northern tip. Safe in the knowledge that we will be returning to this area we head west into the Mampodre National Game Reserve. Our journey continues through miles of scenic back roads to our next port of call, the beautiful town of Ponferreda.

Day 4: Wednesday 8th August - 190 Miles

Today we continue our journey and enter the Galicia region of Spain. Galicia is known as the ‘land of the 1000 rivers’ and it is not difficult to see why as we travel through stunning mountains and valleys before entering Portugal via the Da-Peneda-Geres National Park. The historic town of Guimarães is our destination and with the hotel only a few minutes walk from the centre tonight you are free to explore the town with its numerous bars and restaurants. As the first capital of Portugal and birthplace of the nation's first king, Guimarães is one of Portugal’s most historic cities and its medieval streets and well preserved monuments make it one of the most attractive places to visit in Portugal.

Day 5: Thursday 9th August - 185 Miles

Today the tour heads further south into the wine growing region of the Duoro valley. Riding on the ridge overlooking the river and the numerous vineyards, the landscape is spectacular. The Serra da Estrela National Park is located in central Portugal and is a place of surprising contrast. From heavily forested mountains and valleys to lunar landscapes this in an awesome place to ride your bike. Our hotel is no less spectacular offering panoramic views over Cova da Beira valley. With an outdoor pool and a restaurant serving traditional local specialities this is an ideal place to spend the next two nights.

Day 6: Friday 10th August - 100 Miles

Today’s organised ride-out sees us riding through some of the lesser known back roads of the Estrela national park and includes a visit to the Torre monument that marks the highest point of mainland Portugal.

Day 7: Saturday 11th August - 200 Miles

Today as we leave the Estrela national park behind and begin our journey north the amazing roads and scenery are far from over. Our route takes us back to the Duoro as we follow the river along the valley which separates Portugal from Spain. Later in the day we cross the Sierra de la Culebra hunting reserve which is located at the southern fringes of the Cantabrian Mountains and is home to a healthy population of wolves. Situated in the area which once was the ancient kingdom of Castille and crossed by the Spanish route of the silver our hotel for the evening is an old 19th century mansion house which is surrounded by Romanesque churches, stone walls, fortresses and castles. Tonight you are free to explore the narrow streets of this unique Spanish town.

Day 8: Sunday 12th August - 195 Miles

The day starts as we cross the province of León which is characterized by rolling countryside, round mountains covered in forests and picturesque villages. As we head further north back towards the Cantabrian Mountains we take a break by the Lake at Riano. The lake with its backdrop of mountains surrounding its shores has to be one of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere. We re-enter the Picos da Europa national park via the eastern section of the ‘Pots and Pans’ route and make our way to our hotel situated in the heart of the Liébana valley.

Day 9: Monday 13th August - 85 Miles

Although this is our last riding day before reaching the ferry it is anything but a dash. The scenery and great roads just keep coming as we ride the fantastic Hermida Gorge on our way back to Santander and the overnight ferry to Portsmouth.

Day 10: Tuesday 14th August

Arrive Portsmouth 14.15 pm

TOUR INFORMATION

This tour gets underway as soon as we leave the ferry port at Santander. Within the hour you will be enjoying the traffic free roads of the Picos de Europa National Park and begin experiencing some of the best roads you have ever ridden. This theme continues over the next eight days as we cross the regions of Cantabria, Asturias Galicia and Castilla y León in Spain and Braga, Porto, Guarda and Braganca in Portugal.

This tour contains no particular high mileage days and therefore would be suitable for anyone. The riding as always can be challenging but if you are an experienced rider or if you are a competent first timer this tour should not present a problem. Filled with amazing biking roads, incredible scenery and superb accommodation this tour offers a unique touring experience.

Thank you both so much for organizing an amazing experience for me. The tour was faultless in every respect, and everyone in the group had a great laugh. If any one reading this is searching for a quality tour, look no further than these guys, magical.

Linda and I had a fabulous time, we thought the hotels and food were excellent and far exceeded our expectations. Also the routes were well planned to take in the best possible roads available and each day was just about right for the amount of time spent in the saddle.

What a fantastic trip! The ease with which the trip was organised indicated to me how much work Tom and Susan must have put in behind the scenes. This was a trip that I just did not want to stop. Lovely people, lovely roads and scenery, lovely accommodation, comfort breaks, great organisation, can't fault it!
